Guide to Building Wooden Organizers

Guide to Building Wooden Organizers

Most households have a hard time having everything organized. There just don’t seem to be enough places for everything and having a place for everything makes it a lot easier to keep it organized and put away. This can make cleaning easier and make the house a neater place to be. Organizers can be expensive and often hard to customize. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. You can build your own wooden organizers with a few tools, some time, and a plan! These can be used all over the house, shed, and garage for an organized life and a place for everything.

Wooden Organizers for Every Space

You have to use your imagination a little bit when you are coming up with wooden organizers for every space. There are several options and it often depends on the things you need to store there and how you want it to look when it is all said and done. Some of your options include shelving for hanging on the walls, small cupboards, bookshelves (which can be used for a lot more than books), cubbies, closet organizers, crates, wooden boxes (to replace baskets which are highly recommended in organizing books and magazines), and wooden trays. These items can be used in a wide range of capacities and can make a lot of great storage space no matter where you are making it.

  • Shelves

Shelves that hang on the wall can be really easy to make out of wood. All you need is a hand saw (preferably a power tool) or circular saw, a couple of saw horses, sandpaper, wood, and shelf brackets. Stain, polyurethane, and or paint are optional but can make the perfect choice for your decor. If you go to a home improvement store you can get boards of several different options (you can choose pretty woods though they will be more expensive). Choose one that isn’t warped and will lay flat. Choose the width according to space. If you are adding shelves in your bathroom you will want ones that are narrow and don’t stick out really far. However, other locations can handle other options. You then want to choose shelf brackets. Get ones that will actually support your board and cover at least half to tthree-fourthsof the board’s width. You can choose fancy ones to match your decor and have a great look.

To make your shelf measure your space (best to measure twice to make sure that you have the right number). Set up your saw horses and cut the board to the length that you need for space (once again it is a good idea to measure twice). Use the sand paper to sand the edges smooth. Then stain them, paint them, or polyurethane them for protection and to help them meet your decor needs. Next anchor the shelf brackets by either using drywall anchors (you will need a drill) or by screwing them into the studs (you will probably need a stud finder unless you are really good at this). You can either attach the shelf brackets to the top portion of the shelf or the bottom depending on the look that you want. You should also note that it will be a stronger shelf, able to hold more weight, if you hook them on the bottom to support the shelf.

Some options for making this easier is to measure everything out carefully so that you can attach the shelf brackets to the shelf before attaching it to the wall. You will need to measure carefully, but you will save some work by not needing to attach the shelf after the brackets are hanging on the wall.

These shelves can be used for all sorts of things and in all sorts of places. You can use them to place your plants on. You can use them to store bottles and supplies in the bathroom. Add baskets or wooden baskets for a fancier storage space. They can store collections. If you are careful you can even add books, DVD’s, CD’s, or other items to them as well for an out of the way storage option for any wall. Using them to add decorations to your space is also a breeze.

You can make these shelves fancier by taking a router to the edge and giving them a more finished and professional look. These can cost lots of money in the store and with your hand crafted ones they will be more durable and able to hold more weight. Additionally, you can make corner shelves by carefully cutting a square. Then cut that square in half from one corner to the opposite corner. This will make a square that will fit in your corner. Using your wall brackets you can attach it to the wall and have a nice corner shelf. If it is large enough use two brackets (one on each wall). If it is small then use a single bracket.

  • Small Cupboards

Small cupboards aren’t that hard to make and can be done quickly (especially if you don’t have a lot of weighty needs). You will need a saw (the hand held power saw will work), sand paper, wood glue, screws, and wood. Hinges, cloth, paint, stain, or polyurethane are optional. If you will be storing a lot of weight in it, it is best if you also have a router. A basic cupboard is a box that has been hung on the wall. You can add shelves, doors, or even a small curtain to cover the front of it. It doesn’t take much to put it together and you have lots of options for making it.

For most small cupboards a butt joint (where the wood is simply butted up against each other) is enough for this piece. Reinforcing this joint with screws is always a good idea. You will want all of your wood to be the same width and should be careful to measure and cut it so that it is. You will then need two pieces of each length. Two will be your sides and one will be the bottom with the top the same length. You will want the to lay the side down and carefully add glue to the bottom side of the board with glue added to the bottom edge of the board which will be your bottom. Carefully glue them together. While holding them square add two or three screws going through the side board and into the bottom board. Let it all dry. Do the same for adding the top board and then attach the other side board. For a back, you can take thin boards or particle boards (1/8 of an inch is good) cut it to fit the back (including the width of all the boards). Nail it into place. You now have a very simple cupboard.

Boards, the same length as your top and bottom can be cut for shelves and added in the same manner. You can add a curtain by stapling it to the top or attaching a small curtain rod to the cupboard. You last option is to make a door or doors. You will need to cut your board to size and attach it using hinges. To keep it in place it helps to add a magnet latch to the door. You will most likely want the knob of your choice as well.

Sand all of your edges and then paint, stain or polyurethane it for the perfect little cupboard. These can then be hung to wthe all using shelf brackets, small brackets, or by attaching hanging brackets to the back of the cupboard. Your choice should take into consideration how much weight the cupboard will hold. This design works great for small cupboards, but it isn’t strong enough for larger ones which will handle a lot of weight.

If you small cupboard will be holding more weight then you should use a router to make grooves in your side walls. Use these to hold you top, bottom, and shelves. Do this by making a groove about 1/4″ deep and the width of your wood about 1/4″ from the top and bottom. Then make one in the wood where ever you desire a shelf. Slide your shelf into this groove (to check for space). If it is a little tight then gently tap it in with a hammer, if it is really tight then use sand paper to sand the groove some. Remove the board and add wood glue to both pieces of wood. Gently slide the board back into the groove, square it off, and let it dry. This is a better joint and will be more secure. You can add screws for additional security if you wish.

  • Bookshelves, cubbies, and closet organizers

Much like the cupboards, you can make bookshelves, cubbies and closet organizers. You will want to do this by beginning your project with a plan (larger projects need a written plan, but don’t worry you can make your own). Measure out the size that you want it to be. This is simple if it is fitting into a specific place (such as a closet). You can choose where you want shelves, cubbies, or where you want bars for your clothing to hang. You can do small shelves that are close together or squares for sweaters and other types of clothing. It is best to use the router method for a strong piece of furniture that will last a long time. You can even set it up to make hooks for hanging clothes, a bench for sitting on, and cubbies or drawers for other items.

  • Crates, wooden boxes, and trays

Crates and wooden boxes can be used on shelves, in closets, and even on the floor to store things. Often times decorating articles or organizing articles will recommend using wicker baskets. However, they can get expensive. You can make beautiful crates and baskets that will also work and look great.

For a crate ,you will want four pieces of wood the height that the crate will be. Their other dimensions don’t matter much, but should be the same on all four pieces of wood. Then take boards to make your slats out of and a board for the bottom. Using wood glue and screws attach the corner supports of your crate. Then attach the slats to your supports. You can do this with wood glue and nails or wood glue and screws. Once dry these simple to make crates can be used for books, magazines, toys, towels, cleaning supplies, and a wide range of other items. You can make them prettier by staining, painting, or using polyurethane on them. Your wood quality can also determine how nice they will look. If you want you can cut a square of cloth (something pretty) and use fabric glue to make a new sew edge. Place this square in the crate for a pretty liner.

Boxes can be made the same way only using sides that will cover the entire space. They can be used for smaller items as well and you can line them with cloth to make them even more lovely. A wide range of sizes can be made for a wide range of uses. Small ones can be used on a dresser, bedside table, or at the sink for jewelry and other small items. A slightly larger one can be used for all of your makeup or hair supplies. They can also be used for all the things of a crate and offer a lot of different options for use all over the house.

If You Like to Buy – Complete Manual of Woodworking

Wooden trays are short boxes that you can add separators to. These can be long for longer objects such as pencils. Short ones can be made for small items such as paper clips. These can be placed in drawers to keep them organized. However, you can also use them on top of tables, dressers, or desks to keep you items separated and neat. To make a lot of segments you can use the butt joint (such as when making your cupboard or box) or you can use the router for a tighter fitting section.

All of these options make for great ways to keep your life organized and you can carefully build all your organizing needs for each and every room of the house. Take it a little at a time and work your way into a cleaner, neater, easier to maintain the house.
